Our entry to the competition for a new bridge connecting the Phoenix Park to Lutyen’s War Memorial Gardens involved a solid stone path, floating in a shallow masonary arch over the river. The 200mm thick Leinster granite deck was pre-tensioned and supported on two slender ribs of stainless steel fabricated as a contemporary version of a Belfast Truss. These spring from large anchor blocks set into the earth work abutments that ramp out of the ground in circular form on the south bank and as a slender half cone on the north bank.
