Photographs from our recently completed job at King John’s Castle in Carlingford where HHC, working with the OPW carried out conservation work and improved accessibility into the castle. This involved designing a new ramped visitors entrance and portal leading into the front courtyard where existing souterrains were uncovered. These were highlighted in the paving from which another ramped structure was installed bringing visitors into the former great hall, where a elevated walkway gives stunning views out to Carlingford Bay. A palette of concrete and corten steel were chosen to complement the existing stone and highlight the insertion of new elements into the ruined edifice.
