The Millennium Bridge

Located in the historic centre of Dublin City, the commission of the Millennium Bridge was awarded following an international competition, which attracted 157 entries. The new bridge is a dynamic contemporary design – simple, lightweight, transparent and structurally daring, while fitting sensitively into the historic granite quays, which curve out to form generous abutments that diminish as they taper down into the river.

The sensuous curves of the truss are also expressed in section and plan in the abutments, which respond to the movement of people flowing on and off the bridge and the river passing below. Designed in collaboration with London structural engineers Price & Myers, the bridge opened on time and on budget ten days before the new millennium, since when it has proved to be a popular and effective addition to the city infrastructure.
