Another part of our ongoing masterplan for the Law Society campus involved the design, of an extensive refurbishment and extension of the existing Green Hall building. A protected structure, it was constructed as the gymnasium of the Blue Coats School, our brief was to provide extra circulation, and flexible accommodation for the Education Department. The project creates a viable use for the existing building using sensitive contemporary interventions and additions, which sit comfortably alongside the existing historical fabric while addressing the large open space of the adjoining Oxmanstown Green. Due to programme constraints of the academic year the project was carried out in a number of phases.
Phase One included a new mezzanine floor, conservation and repair, services upgrade as well as provision for universal access. Phases Two and Three included a series of new flexible teaching spaces, new offices, a mock court and the addition of two glazed lightweight extensions to provide flexible space, a new entrance with circulation for universal access. The ‘loggia’ presents a glazed entrance front to Oxmanstown Green, the oldest green space in the city. A first floor glazed extension, conceived as a ‘lantern’, bookends the view along ‘academic street’ and announces the Green Hall within the campus. A redundant IT room was converted into a mock court, clad in natural oak it is designed to capture the spirit of typical Irish court rooms.
