Dunloe Castle was constructed in the thirteenth century and occupied until the early twentieth century, after which it fell into a ruinous state and was about to collapse. Standing on high ground overlooking the River Laune, its battlements command some of the finest scenic views in Ireland. We oversaw a programme of structural repair and consolidation works, while providing safe access to the wall walk behind the upper battlements.
Carried out with the assistance of a Fáilte Ireland conservation grant, ivy was removed, structural repairs initiated to stabilised the ruin, original historic fabric was revealed and masonry repaired, together with the insertion of a series of metal galleries and staircases to facilitate access and maintenance, from which the public and hotel guests can interpret the ruin and enjoy the magnificent views.
